Welcome to the Parents section of E-Safety

The internet is such an integral part of all our lives and we can access it in numerous ways. Whether on a computer at school, a laptop at home, a games console or mobile phone the internet is becoming more and more accessible wherever you are.

As you would teach your child how to stay safe in the real world, you will want to make sure that they are safe in whatever they are doing. Online safety skills are as essential as learning to cross the road or ride a bike. If your child understands the risks they can make sensible and informed choices online and enjoy all that the internet has to offer, whilst staying safe.

So how can you protect your child online?

The SWGfL have published advice on how to protect your child, they call it their GOLD rules

Ground rules

  • How should the internet be used in your home?
  • Keep information private – think, would I tell this to a stranger?
  • Agree rules about meeting online ‘friends’ in real life
  • Generally- if not acceptable in real life it shouldn’t be acceptable online

Online Safety

  • Anti-virus and parental monitoring systems
  • Online safety guides
  • Activate security and privacy settings

Location

  • Internet access should be in a family room, rather than a bedroom
  • Be aware that devices such as gaming consoles ( PSP, PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS, iPod Touch etc) or mobile phones can access the internet
  • Or via a neighbours wireless network

Dialogue

  • Share the experience
  • Get them to teach you – this is better than any course you can go on
  • Ensure they are happy to talk to you if they have any problems or feel uncomfortable

What about when my child is at Beaufort?

At Beaufort we have many different methods of protecting our students. Our internet connection comes from the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL). The SWGfL, amongst other things, provides a filtered internet connection for the vast majority of schools in the South West. They will filter out inappropriate content before it reaches the school. The technicians at Beaufort also have the option to add more sites to the filtered list as an when they are discovered. As there are hundreds of new sites being made every minute we are always playing catchup.

In addition to the filtered internet connection, we run a software package called Impero on all machines.

Impero allows the school to monitor what applications are run, websites visited, documents printed, deleted files etc. It also has a built in violation list, so if a student accesses inappropriate content, or types an inappropriate word it will take a screenshot of the computer and save this to a log. If a teacher is monitoring the class it will also flag up a violation on their machine, alerting them to the computer and user. The log is checked by the technicians on a weekly basis.

We also have an acceptable use policy that every user has to accept when they logon. Read the acceptable use policy here.
