From the Headteacher……

We were delighted to welcome to Assembly this week Colin Ellis, the Chair of The Rotary Club of Severn Vale, together with Martin Greaves from The Rotary Club. Rotary Clubs across the world are raising $200m to eradicate the disease polio from all countries in the world. The School Council agreed that this would be a charity that the school supported this term and we were able to hand over a cheque to The Rotary Club for £1,080.15. This will be sufficient to provide life saving injections to over 5,000 children in the developing world. Thank you to all of the school community who supported the fund raising day.

Following the very positive response to our initial consultation on forming a Trust we have now published the detailed proposals on our website. We propose to form a partnership with Harewood Junior School, Grange Primary School, the University of Gloucestershire, NHS Gloucestershire, Mid Counties Cooperative Society and NCH Action for Children. We believe that this partnership would have real benefits for both our pupils and their families across all three schools. The Governors of each school will make a final decision at the end of June about the Trust. We will keep you updated in our next newsletter in July.

Reminder -

End of Term 5 - Friday 28th May 2010 - 3.15pm

Start of Term 6 - Monday 7th June 2010 - 8.30am

Year 8 Rugby League Winners

The Year 8 Rugby League team participated in the annual Rugby League Festival held in Cheltenham and managed to win a trophy for the first time. Beaufort topped the group stage with some hard fought victories against local rivals Crypt and Severn Vale, whilst drawing against a physical Dene Magna side. In a tough competition the Year 8 boys managed to beat The Crypt School in the final by 5 tries to 4. It took an extra time winning try from Jordan Douglas. The win is a testament to how hard they have worked as a team throughout Year 8. Jordan Hancock was also awarded player of the tournament for his consistent performances in each game.

Year 10 Photographers make links with The Star College

The new GCSE Photography course is well underway and students have attended several trips during their first year. Trips have included a visit to Gloucester Cathedral and a visit to Bristol Zoo. Each trip provides the students with the opportunity to take photographs for their course work in relation to different styles of photography.

The students are currently working on a pinhole camera unit and have made links with the students from The National Star College (Ullenwood), who visited Beaufort Community School on Tuesday 11th May. During the afternoon session The Star College students had lunch and then attended a photography lesson. The students were divided into mixed groups and challenged to create interesting and unusual pinhole cameras for use during a second session, which will take place on Tuesday 25th May at Ullenwood. Interesting camera designs have been constructed from a tennis ball and a crisp packet!

You are invited to see the results of the group project, along with a mixture of Key Stage 3 art work at this years Arts and Craft Exhibition at St Georges Church, Grange Road, Tuffley on the 11th and 12th June.

Gifted and Talented News – English Department

Following on from our recent success with the Mini Saga competition we have recently entered into the Young Writers Past Poets – Future Voices competition. Pupils have studied poetry in its many forms, including haikus, ballads and sonnets and then written their own verse on various themes. The following three poems have all been written by gifted or talented individuals in Year 7.

FULL MOON

All day he is human

Like everyone else

But when full moon is here

The beast lurks about

He visits little children

Feasts upon their flesh

Parents wake to horror

To see their children dead

Whenever its full moon

Parents lock away

As it’s never safe, when

Werewolves feed again. Kieran McDonagh

KITTEN TO A CAT

My mum gives birth to me,

Small, cute and furry,

My eyes open slowly,

And I am not lonely.

All from the same Mr,

I am the sixth sister,

With my only brother,

Who’s so special to my mother.

We all gather round to have a feed,

We all take turns, that’s what we’ve agreed,

As mother’s milk helps us grow,

Drinking it all very slow.

As I grow older I lie around,

Relaxing without a sound,

I cuddle up to my sisters and brother,

Unfortunately, without my mother.

Rhiannon Eveleigh

PARKOUR

You gotta be strong

You gotta be quick

You gotta be skilful

Not scared of the trick

This is parkour

This is free running

This is style

The reactions are stunning

You gotta show the world

You gotta feel free

You gotta loosen up

To vault like me

This is my life

This is my hobby

It starts with adrenaline

That feeds my body. Dan Langley

The Times National Spelling BeeSpelling Bee

On Tuesday 20th April, four very nervous Year 7s set off to take part in the second Times National Spelling Bee. In all, over 1000 schools took part this year pitting their wits and their spelling ability against each other. The Year 7 team consisted of Henry Davies, Jamie Friston, George Grigg and Rhiannon Llewellyn. At half time, Beaufort were a respectable 4th place on the leader board but they played tactically in the second half to win the round. After a tense totting up of scores the final result was that Beaufort Community School came a very respectable second, losing by the tiniest of margins to Sir Thomas Rich School. Our team did, however, beat Crypt School, Ribston Hall, Balcarras, Thomas Keble and Pitville. A huge congratulations must go to all of the team for doing so well against such stiff opposition.
