GCSE Ciizenship Studies

In accordance with statutory requirements Citizenship is taught as a core subject in Years 10 and 11 incorporating Personal, Social and Health Education. Pupils will receive two lessons per fortnight and will follow the OCR GCSE Short Course

Syllabus. The intention is that each pupil will sit the examination at the end of Year 10 and will complete coursework in Year 11. The course consists of one tier

covering grades A* - G.  Pupils will receive a GCSE grade at the end of Year 11.

The course requires candidates to sit one written examination (1hr ) divided into 3 sections:-

 

Section A - multiple choice and short answer questions (20%)

Section B - document based questions (8%)

Section C - participation based question (12%)

Total examination weighting = 40% 

Candidates also have to complete a detailed Controlled Assessment worth 60% based on a Citizenship campaign on a particular issue:-

Controlled Assessment weighting = 60%

 

OCR’s Short Course covers all of the Key Stage 4 curriculum requirements

including:

Rights, responsibilities and the law

How our democratic system works

Community involvement

Social issues and current affairs

The economy and welfare systems

 

The course intends to help students understand how the society they live in works and the rights/responsibilities of a citizen. It aims to promote thinking about a range of controversial, interesting and relevant topics.  Students will be encouraged to get involved in campaigning to raise awareness and advocate action within the

community as well as considering their role as global citizens.
