In Year 9 pupils will continue to develop their English studies based on some of the units explored in their first two years here at Beaufort, but more importantly students will now begin to prepare for the transition from Key Stage 3 into Key Stage 4. The units studied are now based around the program of study that pupils will follow Year 10 in order to prepare them for the depth of study required for coursework assessment at GCSE. Shakespeare
| As Shakespeare features on the GCSE syllabus and has already been studied in Years 7 and 8, Year 9 allows pupils to develop their skills in reading and understanding a Shakespeare play. Pupils will study an entire play (chosen by the department staff as a whole), exploring context, language and effect, plot and characterisation, culminating in an essay similar to what could be seen at examination level.
| Original Writing
| This unit offers pupils the chance explore the art of short story writing. Pupils will have the opportunity to read a number of short texts and learn the necessary skills of how to write an effective short creative piece. This will teach pupils some basic writing skills, which will be useful when they come to write their original writing coursework in Year 10.
| Non-Fiction Texts
| Non Fiction texts feature in Paper 2 of the English GCSE examination, therefore introducing them to pupils in Year 9 gives students the benefit and experience of handling such texts. This unit explores the Barnardo’s Children’s Charity advertising campaign. Pupils are given the opportunity to explore how the charity generates support through its advertising strategies, by exploring persuasive language and imaging techniques.
| English Exams
| With the abolition of SAT’s in the early part of 2009, the department decided to test its pupils in a different way. All pupils in Year 9 will take a reading and writing test towards the latter part of the academic year. The test will be similar SAT’s but we have tried to fashion it so that the content appears more like what the pupils can expect to see in Key Stage 4.
|
All Year 9 pupils will complete the above units of study for assessment throughout the academic year. All pupils study an additional two units from the list below, which units they study will be chosen by the subject teacher and agreed on by the department as a whole. These units will usually be taught in the first two terms and form the basis of the transition that takes places in Year 9, that being ending their Key Stage 3 studies and preparing for Key Stage 4. Novel
| Pupils will read and study a novel (chosen by the class teacher based on pupil ability and subject specialism), exploring characterisation and plot.
| Poetry
| Pupils will study a specific genre of poetry; for example War poetry, by exploring context and researching authors and their work and making comparisons between various.
| Media
| Pupils will have the opportunity to explore a short film; ‘The Sandman’ and compare it with a short story; ‘The Sniper’ exploring the effect the endings of each text have on the intended audience.
