At Key Stage 4 all pupils are working towards gaining a GCSE qualification in English Language and the majority of pupils will also be studying English Literature which is a separate qualification. Some pupils will also have the opportunity to gain an Adult Literacy certificate. At Beaufort we follow the WJEC specification (Welsh Joint Education Committee). Coursework assessment takes place throughout Year 10 and requires the completion of four pieces of written coursework and three speaking and listening tasks. Year 11 sees students study towards their English and English Literature examinations. Some pupils will take their English Language exam in November; the rest of the year will sit it in the summer term. English Literature is a summer examination. The pupils who sit the early entry English GCSE will be candidates who are predicted a C grade or above, it is hoped that these students will achieve their full potential at this point giving them the rest of the academic year to focus on the English Literature paper. However, if pupils attain a D grade or lower, they will have the opportunity to re-sit the exam in the summer term.
