This course provides an approach to History which does not involve the memorising of a lot of facts but concentrates on the understanding of things that have happened in the past and the way in which they affect the present.
During Years 10 and 11 there are three modules:
1. A Study in Development: This is a study of medical history since
prehistoric times, concentrating on how and why things change over a long
period of time.
2. An Enquiry in Depth: This is a detailed study of the American West in the 19th Century, looking at reasons for settlement, the lives of native Indians and white settlers and the conflicts that resulted.
3. A Modern World Study: This looks at the current problems in Northern
Ireland and aims to create an understanding of the present situation through a study of the historical background focusing on key events such as ‘The Easter Rising’ and the Famine.
Final assessment for G.C.S.E. consists of one piece of coursework (worth 25% of the final mark) and two written examination papers. One examination paper
involves the understanding of written, pictorial, statistical and other evidence of the sort already used in Years 7 to 9.
