Assessment of the course:

All units, with the exception of Unit 2 in year 12, are assessed by portfolio. Students assemble evidence of the work they have carried out as a portfolio. These are assessed by their ICT teachers and a sample is requested by the examination board to be marked by moderators. Units 2 is an examined unit. Each year the examination board publishers a ‘case study’ which describes how a fictitious organisation uses computers to run its business. Students read the case study and prepare answers to questions before sitting the exam.

Course Content:

Unit 1 / G040: Using ICT to Communicate

You will use your presentation knowledge and skills to create a portfolio of different communications, including a presentation on different methods of communicating information and the technologies that support them. You will also compare a collection of standard documents used by organisations.

Unit 2 / G041: How Organisations Use ICT

You will study how organisation (including at least one large organisation) collect, disseminate and use information, how they manage the flow of information between sections or departments and the way they use ICT to access and exchange information. This unit is assessed through an external assessment.

Unit 3 / G042: ICT Solutions for Individuals and Society

The World Wide Web allows individuals to access information on almost any topic imaginable. This access to information has had a fundamental effect on society and the way individuals live their lives. The unit is assessed through your portfolio work. You will produce a presentation of the results of an investigation, including the use of a spreadsheet to analyse numeric data, along with a report on the sources and methods used to find information.

Unit 9 / G048: Working to a Brief

This unit helps you to improve your own performance and working relationships through planning, implementation, management and evaluation of an ICT project.

Unit 11 / G050: Interactive Multimedia Products

Interactive multimedia products play an important role within entertainment, education and in providing information. In this unit you will design and produce an interactive multimedia product that could include flash elements that exceeds the clients

requirement

Unit 14 / G053: Developing and Creating Websites

In this unit you need to use software to develop web pages to convey relevant information to website visitors. The use of the internet and intranet has expanded rapidly over the last few years. Recently, there has been an increase in the need for people with the skills for planning, building and maintaining websites. This unit should help you to develop these skills.
