GCSE Music

The Music G.C.S.E. course comprises the following components:-

 

Composing

During the course of the two years, you learn to write and record 2 totally original

compositions.  We will be exploring many different styles and techniques, before choosing your special interests.  This is always a part of the course where pupils look back with real pride in their own compositions.  (This component is worth 40% of the overall G.C.S.E.)

 

Performing

 Everyone will perform two pieces of music for this component.  Some will sing, some will play, some will sing and play.  You will be expected to perform to your own personal best standard both in a solo and a group situation.  (This component is worth 30%)

 

Listening

 This is a fascinating and extremely enjoyable part of the course..... which is worth 30% of the total marks.  You will follow a course of listening which will introduce you to music for stage and screen, music for special events, music evolution, music of Wales and musical structure.

 

BTEC Music Technology

 

The new BTEC music course is designed to provide students with important vocational experience, while at the same time allowing them to continue to develop their musical skills, as well as their enjoyment of the subject in a very practical-based course.

Exam board and syllabus

You will follow the new BTEC First Certificate in Music. A pass on this course is equivalent to TWO GCSE grades A-C

Course Outline

The course is made of up three UNITS of study, which are completed over the two years

TWO Compulsory Units

(1) Planning and creating a musical product
As a team students will plan, develop and perform a musical event.

This could be in the form of concert, band gig, DJ sessions or musical show.

 This unit is assessed by a performance and a portfolio of work.

(2) Exploring the Music Profession
Through a program of visits, workshops and interviews

with people who work in the music industry, students will

develop an understanding of the different areas of the

profession and the jobs available.

This unit will be assessed through a series of

presentations and case studies.


ONE optional Unit - A choice from :

  • Solo Musical Performance
  • Working as a musical ensemble
  • DJ Technology
  • Producing a musical recording
  • Music Technology

All of these units will be assessed through project and performance work,

and your choice of unit will be determined during the first term of year 10.

Performing - 30% of total marks

Composing - 30% of total marks

Appraising - 40% of total marks

  

Assessment:

Performing - assessed by an external examiner

Composition and the essay are internally marked

The listening exam is externally marked

Pursuing your interest in composition and learning to handle more complex forms and structures; performing on your chosen instruction or voice; and listening to and learning about all genres of music.
