SEN Policy

All pupils at Beaufort Community School are integrated into Physical Education lessons.  It is whole school practice that pupils are taught in ability groups.

As a department we aim to provide an appropriate Physical Education Curriculum for pupils with Special Educational Needs.  Our aim is to implement lessons which benefit all pupils, whether able bodied, or with a disability and allow them to gain a consistent feeling of enjoyment, achievement and fulfillment.

We believe that all pupils are entitled to experience the mental, social and physical benefits associated with exercise and the impact regular participation can have on developing personal qualities of independence, confidence, self esteem, and achievement experienced through individual and team activities.

Access and opportunities to experience success remains a priority for all pupils.  On occasions, special facilities maybe made i.e alternative changing facilities, and the availability of Support Assistants.

In general, pupils with special needs are either given more testing tasks as an individual or group that aim to develop skills of co-ordination and body management to foster an appreciation of physical activity delivered at their level.  This is carried out within the mainstream Physical Education lesson.  In accordance with the school policy, a register of pupils with special educational needs in Physical Education is kept in the P.E department.

All staff use the register to identify pupils with special educational needs and record this information in their registers.  Specific P.E targets are set for such pupils, these of which are continually monitored, assessed and adapted to stay relevant to the pupils needs and ensure pupils attain their capabilities and experience success without barriers or negative feelings towards the subject.

Close liaison with the school SEN co-ordinator ensures all the P.E staff are aware of pupils requiring special P.E needs and we as P.E teachers are confident in delivering challenging lessons and employing strategies to secure pupils learning and development through Physical Education.

All staff deliver lessons using the department schemes of work but differentiate content for classes/pupils of higher or lower capabilities with diverse learning needs.  Therefore staff will usually be prepared for a varied level of performance in each class.  Differentiation through task or outcome can enable staff to ensure that all pupils work at their own level, and fulfill their potential.

Extra-curricular activities cater for all abilities within the school. It provides an opportunity for all levels to come together to perform as individuals or within in a team.

Pupils with exceptional talent are encouraged to attend extra-curricular clubs, matches and competitions to extend their experience and development. Those with exceptional talent are strongly encouraged to pursue their chosen sports with outside clubs and attend trials to train and perform with other of their same capabilities.

The PE department has a wide network of contacts with outside clubs and governing bodies to ensure pupils have access to achieve outside of school.  Notices and posters of such events and dates are displayed on notice boards.
